Our policy
We respect the intellectual property of others and ask the same of anyone who uses this site. In line with the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (17 U.S.C. § 512), we respond promptly to valid notices by removing or disabling access to material that is claimed to infringe. Every image on this site is listed with its source and license on our credits page.
How to file a notice of infringement
Under 17 U.S.C. § 512(c)(3), a notice must be in writing, sent to the agent above, and include:
- A physical or electronic signature of a person authorized to act on behalf of the owner of the exclusive right that is allegedly infringed.
- Identification of the copyrighted work claimed to have been infringed, or, if multiple works are covered by a single notice, a representative list of such works.
- Identification of the material that is claimed to be infringing and that is to be removed or disabled, with information reasonably sufficient for us to locate it (for example, the page URL and a description of the image or text).
- Information reasonably sufficient for us to contact you, such as your name, mailing address, telephone number, and email address.
- A statement that you have a good-faith belief that use of the material in the manner complained of is not authorized by the copyright owner, its agent, or the law.
- A statement that the information in the notice is accurate, and, under penalty of perjury, that you are authorized to act on behalf of the owner of the exclusive right that is allegedly infringed.
Please note that under 17 U.S.C. § 512(f), anyone who knowingly materially misrepresents that material is infringing may be liable for damages.
Counter-notice process
If material you posted or supplied was removed or disabled and you believe that was a mistake or misidentification, you may send a counter-notice to the agent above. Under 17 U.S.C. § 512(g)(3), it must include:
- Your physical or electronic signature.
- Identification of the material that was removed or disabled, and the location where it appeared before it was removed or disabled.
- A statement, under penalty of perjury, that you have a good-faith belief the material was removed or disabled as a result of mistake or misidentification.
- Your name, address, and telephone number, and a statement that you consent to the jurisdiction of the Federal District Court for the judicial district in which your address is located (or, if your address is outside the United States, any judicial district in which the service provider may be found), and that you will accept service of process from the person who provided the original notice or an agent of that person.
When we receive a valid counter-notice, we will send a copy to the person who filed the original notice and tell them we will restore the material in 10 business days. Unless that person tells us they have filed a court action seeking to restrain the alleged infringement, we will restore the material no less than 10 and no more than 14 business days after we receive the counter-notice, as provided in 17 U.S.C. § 512(g)(2).
Repeat infringers
Where appropriate, we will remove content from, and end participation by, anyone who repeatedly infringes copyrights.
